What the creatures community really needs is someone with leadership, who can organise us so thatm instead of all working on seprate projects and hardly ever finishing anything, working one one or two projects and making sure that we GET THEM DONE.
Things are sort of dieing out at the biodome. Nobody has done any work for ages. Including me! what we sohuld do is get half the projects to go on hold and work for the other ahlf of the projects so that things could get done!

Heh - I could help with the programming too, BUT .... I don't like to start tech projects that won't be finished.
BioDome looks a little like you aimed too high, did the stuff that was easy *and* fun, and now it's time to stop and think. You could either do a project reset (after which success becomes possible) or the group could decide to drop the project.
My tech profile is perhaps a little like jennie's I can write CAOS code, but I don't do graphics.
A comment about S/W projects, for whatever it's worth:
I've seen some really impressive Creatures projects, but also a *lot* of half-finished ones. That suggests they are "iceberg" projects - automatically underestimated by anyone who hasn't done it before. This is a very common problem in software development in general - Ive seen it so often I've even developed skills in identifying and avoiding projects which have been set up with 90% of the noise but only 10% of the necessary skills and resources .-)
On the other hand, look at the Norngarden projects and C3inDS - MULTIPLE metarooms from each team - we can perhaps conclude it's *possible* to complete projects, but it's not *easy*.
The standard solutions are (1) to use a group of highly dedicated people who enjoy the activity so much they just keep going 'till it's done, OR to modularize - make smaller pieces, and work HARD to minimize cross dependencies so the modules can truly be 100% completed and perhaps handed on to a new team.
You need a LOT more knowledge and experience to modularize successfully, but some of the successful teams are still around ("Norngarden", "C3inDS" to name the ones whose work I've actually used when playing, and "The Tropics"which I haven't used). Perhaps these people with proven skill and experience would be prepared to provide a little "advice and guidance" to a realistic team?

very well said. I think that it would be a great idea to tone down the biodome project to make it more 'accomplishable'.
Another idea: we could have it so that porjects that die out give all the work done on them to other projects to use providing that the recieving project agrees to hand down ALL their stuff if they die too. This would create sort of a chain reaction within the dieing projects, they would give up their work for the benifit of other, more sucessful, projects. This SHOULD result in more projects being completed because the work is not just left to 'rot' on somebody's hard-drive. Mabey we could even make it a comunity rule that projects must hand on their stuff if they die.

yuppers, i totally aggree with taafite, and I really do like the idea of handing projects down, but I still think it's pretty important to get a preview out...
I had suspected this, when i decided to make aquanornia, when I said I was going to make it, i got one or two replies.. more or less all saying.. great idea *if you finish it*, so I think the whole community is just a little weary of any project that doesn't show the goods.
so, how about getting th easy part done? I.e. the basic room shape, the room layout/types/permision , the door, one or two plants and generally just enough to keep people interested... then people might perk up and say, "ooh, i made the code fo this cool plant", or "this would be really good, there's already source!", which actually happened.
As for sharing sources/projects, I think it's a great idea, and I totally intend to do that with everything... once I err. clean it up a little
Either way, it would be a shame to see this project going to waste

What if I post the allmost-finished fly in the downloads section and put an ad for the biodome in its decripition. That would give the apperaence that we have done stuff even though really thats not alot.
EDIT:
Features of the fly:
flys pretty well
breeds
evolves
near dies out or too many
Um... Unfeatures:
no male/female yet
no eating yet

I just looked at "
www.freewebs.com/the_biodome/" nice graphics!
Is there a room under construction? I have a feeling Ive seen another site with pictures of a rather nice room background too?
Anyway - if you want to discuss project reset, why not have a brief status discussion here? You probably need to nail down project status and overall resources, and update your project plans. I may be able to help a bit with this.

heh - you mean I should join the BioDome forum and explain how the project may be out of control and I can fix it? .-)
I'm happy to chat here on neutral ground, but I can't imagine being able to help any other way. The nost I can do is "feed in" a few ideas and suggestions. The real work has to be done by the active project leadership and organization.

egsactly, its not me you want to be talking too. Go talk to the leaders (starsnik, ambershee i think) so that something can actually happen!
Trust me, we're in such a state that any help will be accepted.
